Visiting Stonehenge: A Timeless Journey into Ancient Mystery

Stonehenge, the iconic prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, beckons travelers with its enigmatic stone circles and rich history. This UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back over 4,500 years, offers visitors a glimpse into Neolithic ingenuity and cosmic wonder.

Getting There:
Located about 90 miles southwest of London, Stonehenge is easily accessible by car or train from London Waterloo to Salisbury. From Salisbury, shuttle buses run regularly to the site.

Best Time to Visit:
Summer solstice (around June 21) draws crowds to witness the sun aligning with the Heel Stone. For a quieter experience, visit during shoulder seasons (April-May or September-October).

What to Expect:
• A state-of-the-art visitor center with interactive exhibits
• Audio guides available in multiple languages
• A shuttle bus or scenic walk to the stone circle
• Breathtaking views of the Salisbury Plain

Did You Know?
The largest stones, called sarsens, weigh up to 40 tons and stand 30 feet tall. Their transportation and precise placement remain a marvel of ancient engineering.

Beyond the Stones:
Explore the recreated Neolithic houses near the visitor center to glimpse life 4,500 years ago. Don't miss the fascinating exhibitions showcasing artifacts discovered at the site.

Nearby Attractions:
• Salisbury Cathedral: Home to the best-preserved copy of the Magna Carta
• Avebury Stone Circle: A larger, more accessible Neolithic henge
• Old Sarum: The site of Salisbury's original cathedral

Insider Tips:
1. Book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, especially during peak season.
2. Arrive early or late in the day for the best light and fewer crowds.
3. Bring a windproof jacket - the Salisbury Plain can be breezy!
4. Consider a Stone Circle Access visit for a more intimate experience.

FAQs:
Q: Can I touch the stones?
A: Generally, no. However, Stone Circle Access visits allow closer proximity.

Q: How long should I plan for my visit?
A: Allow 2-3 hours to fully experience the site and exhibitions.

Q: Is Stonehenge accessible for those with mobility issues?
A: Yes, the site offers wheelchair access and mobility scooters.

This was a great day trip to the west of London sightseeing Stonehenge and Windsor! Meeting inside of Victoria Coach station and leaving around 8:30am. Our tour guide Mel Addams was quite knowledgeable about all things Britain. Learning about London’s history, the monarchy, Stonehenge, and Windsor Castle. I left this tour feeling. I’ve actually learned something new!! Approximately 2 hours by bus to Stonehenge and nearly 2 hours to wondering & explore. Followed by a short 1 hour n 20 minutes to the town of Windsor. Escorted into both sights for a quick check in process. Mel really made the experience efficient and easy to navigate. While Andres provided a smooth and safe drive. Overall, I would highly recommend this day tour for seeing Stonehenge and Windsor Castle. Pro Tip: pre download the app and audio tour for Stonehenge prior from their website (need headphones). Windsor Castle tour provides audio with headset.
Mel was awesome!

Mel was the BEST tour guide on this trip! He was very informative, funny and made the trip even better. We were glad we only did two sites on this trip as I don’t see how we could have fit another in. Was a blast!
